Tutoring Style and/or Experience
I graduated with a B.S. in math from MIT in 2007, worked in quantitative finance in New York and London, and am staying in New York for graduate school next year. I have extensive teaching and tutoring experience in math.
I have long enjoyed problem solving; as a high school student I attended the Math Olympiad Summer Program, from which the USA team is selected to compete at the International Math Olympiad. In college, I ranked in the top 200 on the Putnam Competition, the premier math contest for college students in North America. I also earned perfect scores on the SAT math section, SAT II: Math IIC subject test, GRE math section, and AP Calculus BC exam.
Being a recent college graduate with diverse interests helps me relate to students. I know the material backwards and forwards, I am always mindful of what the student is and is not grasping, and I do not rely on tricks or excessive memorization, preferring instead to instill a mastery of the fundamentals. It's always a pleasure for me to help a student realize his or her potential in math, whether through school classes, standardized tests, math competitions, or enrichment.
-Private tutoring since 2000.
-Art of Problem Solving, the largest math site on the web. Worked for two years as a teaching assistant (for classes on number theory and combinatorics) and a reviewer of written problem sets.
-Harvard-MIT Math Tournament. Served on the Problem Committee for two years.
-MathCounts, the national middle school math competition. Founded and coached two teams over five years, including top-ten individuals at the state level.
-MIT volunteer tutoring network. Founded and tutored for two years.
-Center for Talented Youth, a residential summer program for students in grades 7-11. Teaching assistant in math for one summer.
While I tutor all types of students, I also have specialized experience teaching those in grades 5-12 who desire a perfect or near-perfect score on the SAT or other standardized tests, need to prepare for skipping grades or math classes, want to hone their problem-solving skills for math competitions, or simply need to be challenged beyond their math classes.
