EXPERIENCE and CREDENTIALS
I have over 15 years of experience in tutoring and education. Starting in college, I was a peer tutor for my fellow UIC College of Engineering classmates. After I completed my BS in Mechanical Engineering, family and friends would ask me for help in math and science. People told me that I should be a teacher, so I started substituting for both elementary and high school and ended up earning my Masters of Education in the teaching of Physics. I have been an IL certified high school science teacher for seven years and have taught physics, biology and algebra.
Meeting Student Needs
Every student has a unique learner personality and comes with a unique background of educational experience. I start each tutoring relationship by getting to know my students through a personal interview with them and the parent or guardian. I identify student learning styles, strengths and weaknesses, and design an individual approach to their learning. Every student has their own pace and that can also vary with different subjects and topics. Additionally, I can administer short diagnostics or standardized tests if needed for specific topics, subjects or goals. For example, a practice ACT for science or math skills, Lawson’s Test of Scientific Reasoning for physics, basic algebra quiz, etc,.
For some students flash cards work well for memorization, for others word associations or mnemonics. I incorporate hands-on activities when possible and provide you with knowledge about technological resources for additional skill practice. As they say, there really is an app for everything.
Planning for Success
During the initial meeting we will identify specific goals that the student would like to meet. I work with my students to nurture their natural strengths and build in the areas in which they need growth. I will help your child be self-reliant by boosting their study skills and problem-solving skills. Every kind of learner can learn when you use the technique that fits their diverse learner personality. One of the general techniques I use is Socratic questioning, which boosts student confidence because it empowers them to construct their own understanding of concepts rather than merely memorizing facts.
The students I have tutored have all increased their confidence and thus their achievement in math and science and have enjoyed working with me as I have enjoyed working with them.
Whatever the rationale for your choice to homeschool or unschool in Illinois, you know you have the freedom to provide almost limitless educational opportunities. You can tailor learning to your family’s and children’s needs, interests and learning styles.
Why hire a tutor?
Many parents can do just fine shaping their children’s education, but some outsource all or part for various reasons.
Expertise / Credentials
When it comes to higher level math and science, people have varying degrees of comfort and knowledge. As an experienced math and science teacher, I can provide a greater depth of content knowledge, especially in when it comes to physics. Having taken two specific courses Pedagogy of Physics and Modeling Physics Instruction, I bring an understanding of common misconceptions and teaching strategies that work for each concept. My work as a math resource teacher has also equipped me with an understanding of diverse learners and their needs in math and science.
Sometimes dedicating time for home education can be challenging when there are many other tasks staring you in the face at home. Consider the time that your child is receiving tutoring as a concentrated learning time, much like using less a concentrated detergent for the same amount of cleaning. With an expert to guide them through new learning challenges, your learner(s) can build skills and knowledge at a faster pace. This is the critical learning phase known as the zone of proximal development. Even the best commercial educational materials do not have a live person attached to them. I also offer online tutoring, but I feel that it is better to have an in-person interaction in the beginning.
