I have been teaching my own children in a home school environment for nine years and as part of that experience I have also taught in a classroom setting for other home school students. Effectively, I have been tutoring my own children for nine years.
Teaching my own children in a home school environment has given me experience in teaching a variety of subjects. An additional advantage to this situation is that my experience has been on the personal level with my students.
I have always been curious about the things around me, how they work, and I like learning about them. Learning should be enjoyed and it is always a special moment when a child gains an understanding for something.
I try to work with the student to gauge what he does understand and build from that point. If one approach to teaching the subject matter does not seem to be working then I will work to find a way that does successfully connect with the student. While grades are important, I think it is more meaningful for the student to be able to understand and apply that understanding beyond answering the questions on a test.
I graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in computer science. While a student at Michigan State University I also worked as a teaching assistant for an introductory computer class. After graduation I worked at a large telecommunications firm for nearly 20 years. As part of that experience I had to learn new technologies and be able to teach others about the technologies and services the company offered.
