I taught college students in physics courses as a doctoral student for 6 years, and weekly tutoring of students in various physics courses, from algebra-based (non-science majors) to calculus-based. My style is to not only help with specific problems and immediate conceptual questions, but to use these questions as illustrations of more general problem-solving techniques that allow the student to approach future problems without assistance. I try to find different ways of explaining a concept and its relation to equations when one way isn't enough. One of the important goals of a tutor is also to provide an environment in which the student can feel comfortable in making mistakes and to gain confidence in problem solving and thinking.
