Educators can create a permanent imprint in the cognitive and social abilities of a student; as a consequence, their academic success and professional future is under our care. The socioeconomic future of the nation is in our hands; therefore, we must carry out our jobs with an intense sense of responsibility and with the goal of having all of our students succeed in our classroom and beyond. To achieve this goal I have to consider what I am going to teach, how I am going to teach it, and in what type of setting I will teach.
I will construct curriculums that have a multicultural focus. Providing multicultural worldviews to students is of essence to their self-esteem and to the needs of a global society. Students need to be represented in the curriculum in order to see that their own culture and that of others consist of achievers; consequently, allowing students to realize all cultures have equal importance. In addition, multicultural education permits students to move away from an ethnocentric worldview to one that consists of cultural relativism. This kind of perspective taking is important to have in a multicultural nation in order to avoid strife among members of different communities.
An educators priority should not only be to teach certain content but to teach it effectively. My obligation is to teach through an array of teaching styles and strategies in order to maximize the delivery of content. Teaching styles should target the multiple intelligences that are present in students, and the strategies should facilitate students use of the different levels of Blooms Taxonomy. These styles and strategies should be employed within the context of a constructivist approach to teaching, which permits students to actively engage in the learning process through authentic experiences. By integrating critical thinking and active learning into my lesson plans, I will be preparing my students for standardized testing, such as the FCAT, and for the challenges of the workplace.
For learning to be effective, the learning environment should be an affectively comfortable and positive setting. Teachers should treat students with the same respect they give to their peers. However, teachers should not forget to be assertive and consistent in order to insure the students respect him or her, and that they behave appropriately. I will bring a smile with me every day. My students need to know that I am happy to be there with them. This will help students be more receptive to learning. If they feel displeased with their surroundings, it will be difficult for them to learn. The students will then show feelings of indifference, or they will misbehave.
When I went to school, I felt that my teachers were teaching incorrectly and in
a negative atmosphere they had helped create. As a student, I could not pinpoint what was wrong and how it came to be. Now that I have taken many education courses, I understand that my teachers failed because they were unfairly strict, hostile, and pessimistic. In addition, they did not follow or were not aware of many current pedagogical theories and methods, and they promulgated a mostly Eurocentric curriculum. I will use appropriately what I have learned in order to help my students achieve the learning objectives that I will set out for them, which I will create in conjunction with the Sunshine State Standards. Teaching is a dynamic activity in which you constantly have to modify the lesson in accordance to how the students are responding to it. Because teaching is a process of trial-and-error, I am assured that as an educator my craft can only improve with each passing school day.
