Tutoring Style and/or Experience
My name is Jennifer and I am very excited about the opportunity to tutor. I have a Masters Degree in Education as well as an elementary teaching credential. I taught kindergarten for four years before I took a break while having children. For the past two years I have been assistant director of a preschool and have really enjoyed it. Due to budgetary constraints, my position has been eliminated. Through some self exploration, I have realized that my passion is teaching children. While I loved working in a classroom setting, I love working one on one or with small groups. I find such gratification in knowing that I am helping children excel in their work. I have had a lot of tutoring experience, and each session is so rewarding. I get so excited when I hear about my students getting great grades and knowing that I am their support system.
The advantage of tutoring is the fact that it's one on one. A good tutor teaches to a specific child's style and interests. A great tutor's teaching style should match the child's learning style. It's crucial that the tutor really gets to know the student and caters their lessons to student's interests.
I also believe that tutoring is a team effort. I think it's very important to work closely with the parents and the teacher(s). The tutor will first find out what the parents' goals and expectations are. It's important to establish an objective and stick to that focus. With parent permission, the tutor will schedule a meeting with student's teacher to find out what areas the students are struggling in. The tutor will stay informed of what the student is doing in class and material covered. Ideally, the tutor's material will complement the school work.
A clean and organized work area is also essential for successful tutoring. This adds to both the tutor and student's productivity and focus. A good tutor has extra games and activities ready in case there is extra time or for any other unforeseen circumstances.
Lastly, I believe that young children need plenty of positive reinforcement and encouragement. Verbal praise should be given liberally. A tutor might also have a treasure chest of small items or school supplies that a child can pick from at the end of each session or a group of sessions.
Tutoring young children can be challenging but also very rewarding. The key to a successful experience is to create an organized learning environment with lots of creative activities.
