I have a master's degree in Counseling and a bachelor's degree in English and Latin. I have years of experience in tutoring Latin, writing, and psychology, and I have worked with students of varied ages. I also have experience counseling undergraduate students on academic probation. This combination of counseling skills, academic knowledge, and tutoring experience has equipped me to be the best tutor possible.
Although we all have different areas of strength in learning, some students struggle with learning at least partly because of test anxiety or some cognitive obstacle that has nothing to do with the material (e.g., negative self-talk). It's important to me that I get to know the student and understand what he or she needs individually. I like to give the student ownership over the learning process to avoid any expectation that I will do the work for him or her. I plan lessons that target the student's priorities and anxieties as well as ensure that he has a firm foundation in knowledge of the subject. I assign homework between sessions so that we can measure our progress. I also maintain a positive attitude, because the mood of the sessions can greatly impact the student's ability to learn and gain confidence.
