During my Master's program in Elementary Education, I had the opportunity to work full-time in two different schools in Connecticut. During this time, I was able to tutor students one on one as well as in small groups. In addition, I worked at a pediatric facility and was fortunate to tutor a number of children who had special needs. Not only did I tutor children in subject areas, but I also worked on organizational skills and social skills that are applicable in school and in life in general.
When teaching and tutoring, I try to focus on strengths and interests. If a subject or idea is difficult, it is best to relate that idea to a child's hobby or area of comfort (ex. If a student is interested in baseball, relate difficult math problems to batting averages, etc.). Going the extra mile in this way encourages children to embrace the same material in a new and more accessible way.
