Dave R. of toronto on Canada Tutor Profile
Tutor Personal Information
I believe in a deep understanding of math. I ask probing questions in order to lead a student to say the answer on their own before I ever say it. Often, I'll follow by formalizing and generalizing the concept my student has just figured out on their own.
I believe that every student learns differently and am very flexible in terms of how I present material. I can teach a concept by relating to a real-life example, by using visual aids, by showing the mathematical proof, or by generalizing a numerical pattern. These are just a few examples, but I always try to present math in the way that most suits my student's learning style.
I also believe that the goal of education is not to impart knowledge, but to develop skills. If I can turn a student into an independent learner who can solve a problem on their own, I've done my job. In short, I'm trying to put myself out of work. :)
I believe that tutors can be a very beneficial supplement to regular school. However, tutors are often used ineffectively. I believe that students should always attempt their homework on their own and only come to their tutor with the problems they couldn't solve. I don't think tutoring sessions are a time for students to do their homework that they haven't tried independently.
