Most of my experience in the work force has been as a laborer or independent contractor. These are the employment experiences that have sustained my family. Machining parts has brought me closest to the sphere of applied math. However, for the most part, this discipline remained dormant until my kids came along! It was then that I realized that if my children had an aversion towards math - as a lot of kids do - the environment that they might inherit one day would swallow them up. With much ecosystem destruction, scientific insight of the most complex nature will be called for if we are to turn our planet's future around. As math is the core component of engineering and science, having a cadre of youth equipped to handle complex mathematical concepts, structures and computations is crucial.
Having never lost the deep seated interest that I had as a child for this subject, I'm fortunate to be able to both recall the subject and indulge in independent study at this time! For young people studying the subject, I think it's essential that they get a strong foundation in the real number system, equation solving skills and solving polynomials. Also, understanding theory is just as important as good problem solving mechanics. With this start, children will be ready for advance math before high school- even college.
Hopefully, I will be able to impart these skills to children and young adults, and prepare them for tomorrow. As long as they stay focused, only the highest levels will be attained.
