Tutoring Style and/or Experience
I graduated from Gettysburg College, Summa Cum Laude, am a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was Valedictorian of my graduating class.
I have a Masters degree from the University of Chicago in Byzantine History which required proficiency in reading not only in Latin but also in Ancient Greek.
I am certified to teach Latin and Social Studies in the state of New York, and I also have over fifteen years of experience teaching Latin at the middle and high school levels.
My approach to Latin is primarily structural. I begin with my students by emphasizing organization and study skills, which are necessary to achieve proficiency in any language. From that point I drill students constantly on the memorization of their conjugations, declensions and vocabulary, without which understanding translation is not possible. As to translation, I endeavor to make certain that the student can identify and analyze each word in the sentence. In other words, the student will be able to identify their nouns and verbs, and analyze their forms to determine whether the noun is a subject, or whether the verb is in the present tense. This is partly achieved through a detailed mapping of sentences. Only then is correct translation possible. This method has the added advantage that, along the way, the student learns and reviews English grammar as well as Latin.
In my experience, students are challenged by Latin primarily because teachers expect the student to translate (provide the 'what') but not to identify and analyze (the 'why'). Consequently, Latin's rules seem arbitrary and frustrating. My goal is to expose the elegant simplicity and logi of Latin grammar that in part is responsible for its beauty.
I very much enjoy working with students on an individual level, and I love working with the Latin language in any capacity.
