I have worked with a wide variety of children including advanced readers to the lowest functioning disabled students, utlizing many different teaching styles. In my undergraduate time at Saint Joseph's University I participated in the Summer Scholars program, and was able to work alongside well-respected reading/literature professors, observing and practicing their techniques. I was lucky enough to see the impact that their teaching tactics made on a student's ability to read and comprehend in only a short amount of time. I have taken the skills that I compiled duing these experiences, and made use of them in the classroom during my student teaching, both in a special education setting as well as in a general education room. These teaching tactics also became imperative when I took on the task of tutoring a 10-year-old boy with severe autism, who quickly showed positive responses to my style of teaching reading to him on a weekly basis. I feel very strongly that my learning experiences at Saint Joseph's University have thoroughly prepared me to be a strong teacher for elementary-aged children.
