Orton-Gillingham method of phonics instruction for students in second to fifth grade struggling with basic reading. Reading materials matched to student interest (example: Dr. Seuss stories, non-fiction articles, science experiments, etc.). Use graphic organizers to assist students with reading comprehension. Focus on important comprehensions skills: factual recall, inferences, main idea, prediction, drawing conclusions, connections to prior knowledge, and summarizing. Assistance with answering comprehension questions and basic writing skills. Work with vocabulary using roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Build fluency by gradually increasing level of complexity of the text.
