Tutoring Style and/or Experience

I have thirteen years of experience teaching and tutoring Latin, Greek, history, and writing. I have worked mainly with college students at Vanderbilt University, Davidson College, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Rutgers University, but have also tutored students from middle school through high school in these subjects as well as in grammar, spelling, and reading comprehension. I can also help with composing the all-important essay for college applications.

I enjoy teaching and take great satisfaction in helping a student reach that moment where he or she says 'ah-ha! Now I get it!' I believe that a good education can open almost any door, but that the current method of instruction in many schools frustrates many capable students who only need a little extra, personalized instruction in order to reach their full potential. Tutoring provides me with the opportunity to fulfill better one of my career and personal goals: to help those students who really need help with their school work.

I approach teaching with enthusiasm for the subject matter and for learning in general and I bring patience and a healthy sense of humor to the task. Above all, I strive to encourage students to realize that they can learn any subject and do well on any assignment. I have frequently found that what a frustrated student most needs is to be shown and reminded that everyone struggles at some time with a subject or new concept, and that this struggle is just a normal sense of frustration that does not reflect his or her intelligence or abilities. This approach usually frees the student from a sense that he or she has to
