When my child started struggling in school, I knew I needed to take action. Research into good reading instruction led me to train in Orton-Gillingham, the method that has proven highly effective with struggling readers, many of whom have dyslexia.
Some experts estimate dyslexia affects almost 20% of the general population to some extent. In our schools, the majority of children entering special education are there simply because they are having difficulty learning to read. There has to be a better way! And there is!
I decided to homeschool my child, and did for four years. As part of her studies we used the Barton Reading & Spelling System, an Orton-Gillingham based program. Seeing how effective this system was for my child inspired me to work with other students. I specialize in long-term reading instruction; in helping children (or adults) understand the code of our language. This one-on-one tutoring pinpoints the student’s confusions, works with those until mastered, and then moves on, always working at the pace of each student’s specific need. It works!
