Tutoring Style and/or Experience

I am a high school English teacher, as well as a private tutor with 10 years of tutoring experience.

My philosophy is that teaching begins where the student is at, that real learning only happens when the focus is on the individual rather than the content. To make an analogy, if a bucket is full of holes, no matter how much water you pour in, it will always end up empty; however, if you patch the holes first, then the bucket can begin to hold water. Thus, students should be introduced to new ideas by way of terms and concepts they have already learned or experienced, and then guided to where they need to be.

At a fundamental level, learning is all about developing habits – and the habits of being a good student can be learned and strengthened. My goal is to develop these positive habits, while also cultivating intrinsic motivation so students will become self-driven, lifelong learners.

I work to cultivate caring and compassionate, yet professional relationships. My compassion has proven successful in getting students on the cusp of failure to turn things around. I never give up on a student, and I truly believe that everyone can learn and be successful.
