I thoroughly respect my students and view myself in all cases as primarily a resource rather than primarily as a judge. I do however distinguish the needs of students as falling into two categories. I can be helpful in either of these two roles.
A. Remedial and Get Ahead: Those students for whom the learning objectives are fixed, required by outside considerations that we must observe, i.e. the defined subject matter of traditional courses for credit and their syllabuses. In this case the role of the tutor may well be to supplement the public or home school teacher, butin any case, to apply pedelogical skills, knowledge, and insights to guide the student in mastering the course objectives.
B. Enrichment. Those students for whom the objectives are determined primarily by the student and in fact may be quite dynamicly shifting. In this case the tutor is truly a mentor, offering to share insights, facts, and conjectures with the student.
